Steinbeis Transfer Center Microcontroller Systems and Microelectronics

Services

  • Development of microcontroller systems based on controllers made by companies such as ATMEL, Motorola, ARM
  • Development of customer-specific microelectronics solutions (ASIC, FPGA, CPLD)
  • Development of database systems (SQL) and customer-specific software (front and back end)
  • Development of faster, more compact cryptographic modules in hardware and software, also for small microcontrollers
  • Preparation of technical documentation and operation manuals under consideration of legal provisions (Section 823 of the German Civil Code)

Key Areas

  • Microcontroller-based remote control systems with increased security or reliability requirements (or both); e.g., controllers with redundant systems or self-testing systems which meet the DIN standard DIN EN 60730-1, electronic locking systems with RSA-based mutual authentication, general microcontroller-based control and adjustment control systems
  • Design and verification of customer-specific FPGA and CPLD solutions for embedded processor systems (primarily Pico and Microblaze, NIOS II or SIRIUS) for general control and adjustment control tasks; fast cryptography systems (RSA, AES, TDES etc.); touchscreen and LCD drivers; data compression; MP3, DAB, and DRM decoders; interfaces; specialty applications (metal detectors, driver switches for 3D applications etc.)
  • Development of ASICs, also as full-custom design
Customer-specific database systems (SQL) for administration of extensive and complex linked data, customer-specific functionality, connection to FiBu and tax accountancy software, stock data imports into new systems, programming of customer-specific front ends with a graphical user interface

Project Examples

  • Radio-controlled window switch for safe operation of wood-burning stoves in enclosed accommodation areas with connection to fume extraction hoods; DIN EN 60730-1 certified
  • Database systems for administration of membership data for large clubs and associations; several employment positions; administration of membership dues, books, various articles and the club newsletter; automatic online banking function for incoming payments with heuristic mapping attempts in case of illegible bank transfer forms (approx. 20,000 incoming payments shortly before year-end); specific functionality for payments for the club newsletter (scaling based on amount and number of ordered newsletters per member; overpayments automatically booked as donations to the club; issue of receipt, if necessary); high-performance search and selection functions; data imports and exports; automatic generation of member lists with special functionality for pre-formatting (for yearly club correspondence)
  • Database system for a large music association to administer data for memberships, dues, sheet music, classes, instructors and other data, with complex cross-links (e.g., who is taking part in which course and when; who is the instructor; who borrowed which sheet music; including dues, bills and dunning facilities etc.); several employment positions; high-performance search, sort and import/export functions; customer-specific functionality for automatic generation of circulars, newsletters, attendance lists for classes, lists for currently borrowed sheet music etc.
  • Current: Development of a microcontroller-adjusted, RSA-secured, radio-controlled locking system
