Special project on retinal implants
The eyetrail STC has been providing coordinating and consultation on a clinical study on retinal implants at the University of Tübingen Eye Clinic since 2004. Researchers involved in the project are working on an electronic chip that can be implanted under the retina of the human eye with the aim of restoring vision to many blind people who have lost their sight due to severe retinal degeneration (e.g. retinitis pigmentosa, choroideremia).

Sleep research
The Pupillographic Sleepiness Test, which was co-developed by the head of the eyetrial STC, has provided the institute with an effective instrument for objectively measuring people’s propensity to fall asleep. When used in sleep medicine, pupillography can help with the:

  • Diagnosis and monitoring of treatment for sleep apnea and narcolepsy
  • Assessment of insomnia

The technique has enabled the eyetrial STC to take part in a large number of successful occupational and travel medicine projects, as well as in psychological and sleep research.

Occupational and travel medicine
The eyetrial STC conducts research into the negative impact of sleepiness on people’s performance at work and when driving. Most of its clinical studies focus on:

  • Problem definition and analysis
  • Sharing of knowledge of health issues (medical training)
  • Industrial workplaces
  • Prevention
  • Early recognition
  • Information/education
  • Occupational road haulage
  • Vehicle development

The studies carried out culminate in well-founded scientific recommendations and specific advice for industries and companies on:

  • Suitable shift patterns
  • Optimization of working environments
  • Driving times and taking breaks from driving
  • Prevention of sleepiness at the wheel
  • Optimum design of vehicle environments
  • Driver assistance systems for older drivers
