The fundamental problems encountered in the various applications of both data analysis and signal processing are one and the same: They both involve the detection of critical structures and identification of typical system parameters. When these sought structures are chronologically localized, or when they occur at various time scales, wavelet methods prove more effective than traditional time series analysis.
