Key issues relating to clinical studies

To assess the effectiveness of therapeutic agents, pharmaceutical companies conduct comprehensive clinical studies. Ultimately, evaluations are based on the success of such studies as measured by the pathological assessments that have until now been largely subjective. Given the high cost of drug development, this situation is unacceptable.

Digital pathology for clinical studies

As a result, we offer services in the field of digital pathology, for the first time allowing diagnostic decisions to be made and the success of clinical studies to be measured based on quantitative tissue data and models. Our long-term research goal is to develop complex data-driven disease models. The goal in the short term is to facilitate the routine application of a new approach to digital diagnostics involving solid tumors, revolving around decisions based on quantitative information.

Co-development of a laboratory and digital assessment

Our core competence lies in the integrated development of immuno-histochemical (IHC) biomarker assays using whole-slide imaging and image processing. Integration in this context means that we synchronize development in the laboratory with image processing relating to this work at all stages of the development process. This is the only way to leverage the full potential of digital pathology for clinical studies.

Network of university-level know-how

Setting up digital diagnostics is complex. As a result, we work closely with a network of technical and clinical specialists in each respective field through our university contacts. These include experts in

  • Pathology
  • Oncology
  • Surgery
  • Tumor biology
  • Bioinformatics
  • Medical computing

Key Areas

  • Quantitative biomarker analysis in cancer research
  • Digital pathology
  • Clinical trials
  • Systems biological modeling of pathological processes in tissues
